Weight Loss: The Challenge of Dieting

Erin Benjamin

Dieting is very difficult. According to a study published in the journal Cell Metabolism, this is difficult because when a person doesn’t eat or eats very little like when on a diet, the brain sends a signal to the body. This is what causes gluttonous hunger and binge eating, which may completely destroy the diet. In short, our bodies are naturally configured to avoid feeling hungry. However, losing weight and dieting is very much possible. You just need to learn how to do it correctly. Here are tips to help you overcome the challenges of dieting.

Eat Smaller Meals Frequently

Weight Loss: The Challenge of Dieting

Instead of eating three square meals, you can eat five smaller meals. This is among the best ways to overcome the challenges of dieting since it prevents the body from going into hunger mode. The basic premise is to eat something even before you feel hungry. Take note that overall daily caloric consumption is very important and there should be a daily caloric deficit in order for weight loss to occur. This is why the next tip is very important.

Educate Yourself

You need to understand the science behind weight loss. This is why you need to learn about calories, daily caloric consumption, how much calorie deficit you need daily and counting calories. You don’t have to be obsessed about calories but it is important to have a basic understanding in order to ensure that weight loss is achieved.

Avoid Fad Diets

Fad diets usually don’t work. Even if they work, the result is only short term and the weight you lose will sooner or later be regained when you go back to your old diet. It is also very likely that you will gain more weight than you initially lost once you go back to your old diet. For example, the liquid diet is obviously effective since the calorie consumption is very low. However, you can’t live your whole life on a liquid diet so sooner or later you will have to start eating solid foods again.

Learn Self-Discipline

For most people, dieting involves a lot of self-control. This takes months or even years of practice. But when you have mastered self-discipline, dieting becomes very easy. However, it is important to be patient and you will usually fail a couple of times before succeeding. Once you have good self-discipline, you can easily turn down even the most appetizing unhealthy foods.

Cheat

One of the secrets to overcome the challenges of dieting is cheating. No, you can’t cheat every day or several times a week. Give yourself a cheat meal or two per week wherein you can eat anything you want. Of course, you can’t go crazy and eat several thousand calories in one meal.
