It is estimated that 185,000 women each year suffer from breast cancer. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the US. There are several factors for acquiring breast cancer including genes, environment and lifestyle. However, there are also several means to help prevent its occurrence. One of those is to take vitamins to help lower the risks of breast cancer.
What are the Vitamins to Help Lower the Risks of Breast Cancer?
Several studies show that there are vitamins to help lower the risks of breast cancer. For instance, according the study conducted by Dr. Cedric Garland of San Diego Medical School, Vitamin D helps decrease 50% risks of breast cancer.
It is said that the calcitriol, or the kind of Vitamin D which is hormonally active, prevents the growth of breast cancer cells and promotes apotopsis. In the same study, the researchers concluded that calcitriol and Vitamin pose several benefits in preventing breast cancer among women. Another good source of Vitamin D is sunlight. Women are therefore advised to get their daily dose of vitamin D by exposing themselves into the sun, ideally nearest to the solar noon to help stimulate the production of Vitamin D.
Calcium, which works hand in hand with Vitamin D, is also said to help prevent the risks of breast cancer. According to the American Association for Cancer Research, calcium can help reduce breast cancer up to 40%. Calcium helps in the stabilizing DNA repair, thus the body’s ability to repair DNA damage is increased.
A separate study also found a correlation of taking multivitamins and lowered risks of breast cancer. According to the findings of San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, women who take multivitamins after being diagnosed with breast cancer has 29% less risk of recurrence. Furthermore, women with breast cancer has 27% less chance of dying if they have been taking multivitamins with minerals at least thrice a week.
Other vitamins that help lower the risks of breast cancer are Folate, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin E. The University of Maryland reported that women who are prone to drinking have higher risks of breast cancer. They also found that taking folate and Vitamin B12 help mediate the risks. Furthermore, women with low folate are found to be more prone to this disease. Vitamin E on the other hand, boosts protection of cells against radical damage.
These are just some of the vitamin studies found beneficial in lowering risk of breast cancer. They can be found in the food we eat and the supplements we take. It is important to know the essential nutrients we can get from our meals, and make necessary lifestyle changes if that means doing away from several health risks such as breast cancer.
