If you are preparing for a job interview or are getting ready to attend a career fair you should consider what it means to dress for success. Dressing for success can mean the difference between landing your dream job and getting turned down from that dream job. In fact, some interviewers will not even invite you into their office if you do not show up to the interview dressed appropriately. Never show up to a job interview wearing jeans, a sweat suit, spiked heels or sneakers. Instead, your outfit should be a pants suit for women and a suit with a coat and tie for men along with dress shoes.
It doesn't matter how much you know about the potential job you are interviewing for, if you show up with your pants below your waist with flip flops on you more than likely won't be getting a call back from that employer. On the other side of things you have to understand that just because you dress to the nines for a job interview it doesn't mean that you will automatically get the job. You might not know anything about the job or the profession, which is what will prevent you from being hired, not your outfit.
Listed below are the outfits that a woman and a man should wear when going on an interview:
Women:- Solid color, conservative suit
- Coordinated blouse
- Moderate shoes
- Limited jewelry
- Neat, professional hairstyle
- Tan or light hosiery
- Sparse make-up & perfume
- Manicured nails
- Portfolio or briefcase
Men: - Solid color, conservative suit
- White long sleeve shirt
- Conservative tie
- Dark socks, professional shoes
- Very limited jewelry
- Neat, professional hairstyle
- Go easy on the aftershave
- Neatly trimmed nails
- Portfolio or briefcase
One thing that has been debated over the years and people will give you different answers nine times out of ten is whether or not men should wear jewelry and how much jewelry women should wear. The lists for both sexes above mention that both men and women should wear limited to very limited amounts of jewelry when going to a job interview. Women can wear earrings, rings, and bracelets but not big hoop earrings that they wear to the club or rings covering every finger. Also, if women have their nose pierced or their eyebrows pierced they should consider removing these items prior to the interview. The same can be said for men. Men should wear their wedding ring (presuming they are married) along with their college ring and that's about it. If the man has his ear pierced he should remove the earring for the interview.
It wouldn't hurt to polish your dress shoes prior to the interview as well and this can be said for both the men and the women. Make sure that the shoes you wear don't have scuff marks on them and aren't torn apart either because this will be noticeable by the person conducting the interview. |
